How These 9 Golden Rules Will Change the Way You Think About Weight Loss

Do you know what types of things you to do to look better, feel better and be healthy?
Do you know what types of things to avoid?
What do you think it means to “eat healthy?” or “eat to lose weight?”
Look back at your answers, where did you learn all these rules?
No doubt, you’re influenced by your past dieting efforts – whether you’ve lost the weight or you’re still working on it. Magazine headlines in the check out, books at Indigo, your favourite celebrities to various Facebook and Social Media accounts, all influence our thoughts and our actions. These rules are based around nutrition- eat this, don’t eat that, avoid this food group, drink these shakes, take these supplements and exercise- this is the best type of workout, spend 1 hour in the gym, do l
ots of cardio. I could go on.
Here’s the point:
Most of what you know about nutrition was taught to you by people who know little or nothing about nutrition or sustainable body change.
But you and I are guilty of following such advice and not knowing if it is correct or even right for you.
And although I am writing about 9-rules, I bet you have been neglecting these. When we want to lose weight so bad, we focus on what we must give up and change and make too many changes all at once without laying all the ground work first and considering it from all angles, outside of food and exercise.
1. Your body doesn't care about how flat your stomach is or how big your muscles are. It is possible to be content where it is while striving for more: growth, learning and change.
2.Weight doesn't just come on suddenly. It is a gradual process. Expect the same to lose weight. There are many layers to weight gain and equally as many layers to peel back to lose the weight and sustain that weight loss. It takes time and patience and goes beyond food and exercise to peel back those layers.
3. Expect that the process won't always be magical, motivating and inspirational. Sometimes it takes more discipline and practice than you expect or are willing to put in. The main ingredient to success is consistency in doing the simple things.
4. Learn why you eat, the difference between physical nourishment and emotional comfort. It isn't more recipes or variety that you need. It is awareness.
5. Learn to say 'no' without explanations. Define your healthy boundaries and your values and use ‘no’ to protect yourself, your goals and your time. Beware that nay-sayers will challenge you.
6. Stop re-starting over and over. Learn to dial it up and dial it down vs. completely stopping. What does 60% look like? Stop abandoning your body and your goals. Stop saying ‘yes’ to the bandwagon. There isn't one.
7. Stop waiting for the perfect time and focus on your willingness, readiness and ability. It isn't about a perfect time. These exist within you not by following a certain diet, looking for the 'best', or taking various supplements.
8. Learn the difference between motivation and discipline. Self-acceptance and self-love.
9. Lastly, your body is on your side. Work with it. Choose self-acceptance. Move it. Feed it with honour. Being a certain size or looking a certain way won't make you happier, more loved, acceptable, or worthy. These have nothing to do with weight or size. Face the lie before you even begin.
Without these 9-rules, you can see that no matter how healthy, clean or restrictive your diet is, it won’t stick. No matter what dieting approach you use, you will bail on it. No matter how much time you spend in the gym, you will stop. These 9-rules should become your everyday guiding principles, not another diet.
