Weight loss is more than training hard and eating well: stress, relaxation, thoughts, beliefs, emotions, pleasure, personal story, eating patterns, and awareness are just some factors that are dismissed but play a crucial role. In a nutshell, what you eat is half the story when it comes to nutrition and your ability to lose weight. Good nutrition is more than eating the right food and taking the right supplements; they’re just a snippet of the whole story.

The other part is who you are as an eater. You see, food is more than numbers, labels, and counting. We need to consider YOU, all of you from head to toe. And then we need to consider how food impacts your life, your goals, your mind, and your emotions. How you feel and what you believe about your choices tell the other half of the story. The mind and body exist on a continuum and profoundly impact one another.

It begs the question, is it about changing YOU as the eater or is it about changing your thoughts and beliefs about food?

When you overeat, it isn’t a willpower issue… it’s more about being present, eating slowly, finding foods pleasurable, eliminating toxic emotional beliefs (feeling that food is your enemy, “If I eat this I will get fat”, fat makes you fat). It’s time to be nourished by food that triggers robust metabolic processes, that signals satisfaction, and gives you enjoyment instead of building a life of restriction, torment, and discomfort.

Bottom line: You can eat the healthiest food in the universe and get your workouts in but until you have the mind-body attitude, you’ll keep spinning your wheels trying to chase the ultimate goal.

For example, let’s look at what a poor emotional state does:

-deregulates appetite, causing you to eat more

-decreases muscle growth

-increases cortisol and insulin which signals weight gain and fat storage

-kills good gut bacteria

-causes digestive upset

-increases unhealthy cholesterol levels

-lowers thyroid and growth hormone levels

-makes us more susceptible to food allergies

We all understand that stress influences quality of life but did you know how much? Stress isn’t just about the obvious like money, relationship woes, a crappy job, and cars repairs. Imagined stressors play a huge role. The body doesn’t know the difference between an actual and perceived stressor. The reaction on the body is the same: increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, decreased digestion.

Know what else can be included in this list of stressors? Guilt. About your food choices, about lack of exercise, shame about your body, and overall judgement about health. These are stressors in the brain with exactly the same response. If you’re thinking self-loathing thoughts, the stress chemistry will lower digestion, and increase fat storage. Negative self-talk leads to appetite deregulation, digestive shut down, mood imbalances, and weight gain.

What you think about food determines how you metabolize food. No two people see or metabolize food the same way.

Here is what I mean:

You are about to eat a cookie. This idea initiates in the brain’s cerebral cortex. From there, information is relayed to the limbic system which regulates emotion and basic survival functions like hunger, thirst, heart rate, sex drive, temperature, and blood pressure. This is where a tiny organ, known as the hypothalamus, takes sensory, emotional, and thought input and translates it into a physiological response.

If your thought process is: This is a great cookie. It is my favourite and I really enjoy it. You metabolize that cookie differently than…

If your thought process is: I hate myself for eating this cookie. Now I am going to be fat. There goes my diet and all my goals. The scale will now go up… This cookie is a symbol of all my failures.

The latter increases the stress response and stagnates digestion. This means that food associated with negative feelings will stay in the system longer, decrease calorie burning, and increase the chances that it will be stored as body fat. And look who wants to join the party—bloating, cramping, and gas.

The thoughts you think about food easily become reality. We see this all the time with positive thoughts (We all know the power of the placebo effect) and the reverse is true too.

Bottom line: What you believe about your food can powerfully impact the way it affects your bodies. In turn, your thoughts can be more detrimental than the food you eat.

Many people who struggle with food are in constant attack mode (more stress). They are caught in a cycle of fighting their weight, their body, their food choices, and they punish themselves with food restrictions, harsh exercise; they bombard their body with hurtful thoughts; and they postpone happiness until they have the perfect body. Exploring the mind-body connection will allow you to see that being supported, having real strategies and tools, and exploring this connection will create lasting change and reach your ultimate goal: happiness.
