Is There More to Life than Food & Fitness?

Is There More to Life than Food & Fitness?

Think about this for a second, as it can be pretty simple to read that phrase again and think, “Of course there is!” And yet, we spend so much time reading fitness articles and recipes online and Facebook posts galore, not to mention health blogs, books, fitness magazines and searching for that diet-success ‘secret’ from your favourite celebrity. In short, some of us end up spending a large chunk of our day concentrating on – you guessed it – food and fitness.

It’s clearly an important part of your life if you are investing time, energy and resources into learning more about fitness and healthy eating and applying what you learned. It is particularly important when you want to change your health outcomes, such as losing weight, ‘toning-up’, increasing your endurance and strength or warding off cardiovascular disease.

Our happiness isn’t dependant on what we are able to lift at the gym or whether we succeeded at making a new fat-free quinoa muffin recipe or how we look in a bikini. Rather, it’s about the things in life that bring us true, uncomplicated pleasure: hobbies, friendships and relationships that bring meaning and joy to your life.

Most Sunday evenings, my husband, our dog and I head out to a local ice cream place for a cone of refreshing delight! On the Sundays that we are able to go, I look forward to packing up the car, taking in the scenery on the drive, and enjoying music and conversation along the way. I simply just enjoy this small treat with my family. Moments like this bring me more joy than what I lift at the gym or how “on target” my eating is.

Our Sunday night drives to get ice cream are more important that food and fitness. They make me happy! There are some traditions that are just not worth giving up.
